Under the Weather

Sorry for no posts lately.
I haven't been feeling too well. :(

I have been thinking about the t-shirt project lately. I am hoping to hear more from the readers on what ideas they have for what kind of project to fund raise for.

I have a meeting next week with somebody and it might be a potential project to fund. It would be a GREAT ONE too. But, I can't give out any details until more information is confirmed. I will keep you posted on it!

I sent an e-mail to the ThumbResources.org organization to see what projects, if any, they are looking for fund raising for. I haven't heard a response yet.....

I am in no major hurry to get started, but would definitely like to see all of this happen eventually. In the meantime, keep your ears open.

the t-shirt project

Hey everyone! I came up with a rough draft "business plan" for the t-shirt project.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

I also need to get together a group of people to help lead up the project. I'll post a blog with more details soon. In the meantime, feel free to contact me if you are interested in helping :)

THE RURAL REVOLUTION PRESENTS

the t-shirt project

Purpose: To get together, have fun, meet new people, get involved in our community, raise awareness and money for a special cause.

1) Choose a cause or project

  • We still need to find a cause or project to support.

  • When we find it, we’ll team up to share ideas and establish financial need/goal.

2) Find some sponsors

  • This all costs money. We have none.

  • Let’s find people/organizations/business that are willing to help us out.

  • The goal is for ALL PROCEEDS to go to the cause at hand.

3) Create a design and get them made

  • Art time. This could be a collaborative design or even a contest
where the winner gets his/her design on the shirt.

  • The design needs to be non-offensive and pro-familiy friendly.

  • The design needs to relate (in some way) to the organization/project being fundraised for.

4) Sell some t-shirts

  • We’ll need plenty of help here too. We might need some permission on where we we can sell them. Maybe school, church, businesses, door-to-door?

  • It would be nice to get the project done before the holiday season for a cool gift idea!

Local Coffee House In Sebewaing

An article by Shar Mohr

For a while I thought the closest coffee house experience I could get around here was having an overpriced McLatte while listening to the sizzling of filet-o-fish in the fryer. That was until I came across Live Wired in Sebewaing.

Live Wired is located in the dark, cool, and cozy basement of the Assembly God Church in front of the USA High School. As you walk down the stairs, the aroma of freshly ground and brewed coffee and cool basement air immediately permeate your nostrils.

The prices are very affordable for the high quality of coffee drinks and excellent coffee house atmosphere that you will recieve.

The place is dimly lit and with cool orange glow. There are all kinds of mismatched chairs and retro furnishings. My favorite is the lava lamp. I think everyone appreciates a good lava lamp. It is as if you are entering the cave of a coffee loving, hippie bear. Which brings me to Chris...

Chris Hooton is the 'man behind the mocha.' He knows quite a bit about all things coffee and is able to brew a very smooth, delicious cup of coffee. (Better than any McCoffee you'll ever taste) During my conversations with him it is abundantly clear how much this man enjoys coffee, and it shows. You can tell he puts a lot of his own heart and soul into the joint. I think he would even live there if he could.

Live Wired is also serves a local music venue. You can check out a concert for usually $5.00 or less!! You can't beat that! Performers have included local bands as well as groups from as far as Grand Rapids, MI and have included different styles of music from rock, punk, accoustic, folk, and more. A few bands that have recently performed (or will be soon) are: The Luminous, Any Given Hour, Green Light Go and Caleb's Hope. The next show coming up is The Luminous on Monday, September 10th at 8 pm with a $5.00 cover charge.

If you haven't checked out Live Wired Coffeehouse, I recommend that you go and take all your friends and even your enemies, because you can be angry when your drinking coffee. You can hang out, do your homework, see a concert, watch the lava lamp for hours, have an Italian Soda or Candy Bar Latte, or take a nap.

Business Hours: Monday through Thursday
3:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Location: Basement of the Assembly of God Church in front of USA High School...just walk in and go downstairs :)

Spread the Word AND T-Shirt Idea

I would greatly appreciate if when you go back to school if you could spread the word about this blog.

The web address is http://theruralrevolution.blogspot.com

I want to get as many people as I can in on the revolution but I need your help. I don't see a lot of people giving feedback, an opinion, or anything.

Start talking people....I want to know you're alive out there!

My next project is possibly getting some T-Shirts made up with the slogan .... JOIN THE REVOLUTION! that will promote the blog and promote people getting out and doing something about the things that suck in our area.

But I can't get started unless I get people talking...Hint Hint!!!

Should the shirts be free?

Should we get sponsors?

Should the profits, if any, be used toward a cool local project or something?

come on............what else..............give me some feeback

Take The Revolution To School

Take the Revolution to School

My favorite part about going back to school was the smell of new school supplies. I still love that smell but no longer have a reason to buy them. At least not until my own kids are big enough.
I wasn't really a huge fan of school. It seemed like survival of the fittest and I wasn't always the fittest. I didn't care for sports. I lacked school spirit. I had acne most of my teen years. ...You get the point...

My biggest problem was that there wasn't a lot else to do if you weren't a major braniac or a major sports nut. I didn't find my groove until high school was almost over. I got into the yearbook/multimedia class and fell in love. I enjoyed writing, taking picutres, and ended up becoming the yearbook editor my senior year. It took me 12 years to get the courage to find something I liked to do and had the courage to get invovled in. Don't wait that long!

Today I want to encourage you to

GO DO SOMETHING IN SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!

You may never get the same opportunities later in life. Don't worry about what other kids think about you. In twenty years you'll all be boring adults with boring jobs and no one will give a crap about what happened in school.

#1 Find an organization/club/whatever and join today.
Make a difference. Voice your opinion. Have fun.

#2 If there isn't anything for you to do............START SOMETHING!
Gather a group of people with the same interest. Tell everyone about your idea. Bother teachers, your parents, your neighbor, the janitor, the lunch lady......EVERYONE needs to hear your idea. The more people you get to back you up, the better your chances are for getting someone to take action.

If you need help please let me know. I will help with brainstorming ideas, how to start a group, where to meet, and more. I would love to help you get started and you'd be surprised who else might also share your ideas. You could start the next new class, club, group, or after school program if you would just be willing to GO FOR IT!

It's A Funding Problem...It always is....

I am sad today.

I had a lady coming to my house for a parenting program offered by the MSU Extension office in Bad Axe. She was helping me with techniques on how to better parent a preschool aged child. My son Ethan has had some developmental delays becuase he was born over a month early. He will be starting kindergarten in a year and I want to make sure he is prepared and is allowed the same opportunites as the other children his age.

Today, my educator (who will remain nameless for privacy purposes) said that she took a different position and will be helping with our local domestic abuse shelter located in the Bad Axe area. I was so happy for her and realize that she will be a wonderful asset to the shelter, which not only protects and houses women (and their children) suffering from domestic abuse but it also houses local homeless. (Yes, believe it or not, Huron County does have a homeless population) Her job at the shelter will be very crucial and will partially include taking the shelter from being privately funded to hopefully becoming more self-sufficient. This, she said, would happen quite a bit from people volunteering. (time/energy/resources/etc.)

She also mentioned that no one will be replacing her spot due to lack of funding and this would be our last class!!! I have been totally bummed out all morning. She helped me learn so many new things and I was making so much progress and not wanting to scream and yell or take off running when being a mom to a preschooler gets tough.

Then I got to thinking.....Oh my gosh?!

Was I so busy worrying about my problems that I compeltely ignored the fact that there are women and children fearing for their safey and lives and homeless right in my hometown.

This area NEEDS this shelter more than I need my parenting education classes. So I took the time to gather information on the shelter and am writing to encourage people educate themselves and see if they might find it in their hearts to do something to help. Below is some information I gathered.

Question Forum

I am opening this up so that anyone with any questions about anything feels free to start posting.

Whether it is questions about the blog, advice, conerns, anything. There are no dumb questions and it might even help someone else who is also looking for answers but is afraid to ask.

So, fire away people.......

What do you want to know or hear about????

A Formal Welcome

You know I realized that I should formally introduce myself and allow others to do the same so that everyone hear can get to know each other better.

If you are willing and comfortable, I'd like to know stuff like your first name or nickname, where you're from, your interests or hobbies, and one thing you could change about Huron County/Thumb Area.

I will go first:

My name is Shar. No, it is not short for anything. My parents were stoners.

I live in Caseville and I hate Cheeseburger In Caseville and would like to move.

I am 25 years old.

I am married.

I have two kids.

I play guitar, bass guitar, and sing. (I wouldn't mind rocking out with someone some time-call me!)

I am starting to get in to acting.

I am a Chrisitan and I go to church at River's Edge.

I like to read books, play with my kids, and play Guitar Hero.

One thing I would change about Huron County is I would get rid of all beer tents at festivals.

What's up with the giant windmill things?

For those of you that have taken a drive around the Laker High area around Berne Rd., Gagetown Rd., and M-142 in Pigeon/Elkton area then you've seen the new FREAKIN' HUGE windmills/turbines/whatever being put up. The blades on those puppies were bigger than my house!!! I drove by yesterday on my way to Bad Axe and there were people parked on the sides of the road with popcorn and Junior Mints watching the things get built? I even saw a dude with binoculars?!

Is there really nothing else to do around here?

I heard that the project costs around $90 MILLION DOLLARS and that there will be 32 total turbines. It won't actually be generating electricity until sometime in 2008. It is also apparently the first commercial wind farm in Michigan. It is kind of exciting to think that something that big is happening in our area.

****I do have a problem though....******

How come we can get $90 million dollars to pay for giant pin-wheels but can't find more things for people to do for jobs, entertainment, fun, etc. in our area??

It was also supposed to bring 80 or so jobs to our area, which a few months ago, was discovered this jobs were being out-sourced to illegal immigrants and other people from out-of-state and elsewhere. I haven't heard the latest update on the job situation but I certainly hope the Harvest Wind Farm (of Elkton area) has considred supporting the people from their own community.

If you had $90 milion dollars to do something with for our area, what would you do with it???
